What Happened to PHEAA / FedLoan Servicing?
PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency), which operated under the brand name FedLoan Servicing, ended its federal student loan servicing contract with the Department of Education in December 2022. PHEAA was formerly the exclusive servicer for all PSLF borrowers.
When FedLoan exited, its loans were transferred to other servicers — primarily MOHELA (for PSLF borrowers) and Aidvantage, EdFinancial, and Nelnet (for non-PSLF borrowers).
If you still see "FedLoan" or "PHEAA" as your servicer: Your account information may be outdated. Log in to studentaid.gov with your FSA ID to find your current servicer.
Finding Your New Servicer
Visit studentaid.gov → log in → "My Aid" → "View Loan Servicer Contact" to find your current servicer.
Most former FedLoan borrowers are now with:
- MOHELA — if you were pursuing PSLF
- Aidvantage — if you had Navient-origin or former FedLoan Direct Loans
- EdFinancial or Nelnet — Department of Education reassignments
What the Transfer Means for Your PSLF Count
If you were pursuing PSLF with FedLoan, your qualifying payment history was transferred to MOHELA. However, discrepancies are common and should be addressed immediately:
- Log in to mohela.com to check your PSLF payment tracker
- Compare the count to your FedLoan records (paper statements, screenshots)
- If the count is wrong, submit a dispute to MOHELA with documentation
Key Actions for Former FedLoan Borrowers
- Identify your new servicer at studentaid.gov — do this first before doing anything else.
- Create an account with your new servicer and verify your loan details transferred correctly.
- If pursuing PSLF: Check your payment count at MOHELA. Submit a dispute if the count is wrong.
- Update your autopay with your new servicer — autopay from FedLoan does not automatically transfer.
- Review your contact information — update your email and address with your new servicer so you receive important notices.
Common Issues for Former FedLoan Borrowers
"My PSLF count is lower at MOHELA than it was at FedLoan." This is unfortunately common. Gather your FedLoan payment history records and submit a formal dispute to MOHELA. The Department of Education has acknowledged transfer discrepancies and is working through disputes.
"My payment amount changed after the transfer." Transfers sometimes trigger a recalculation. Contact your new servicer to verify the payment amount is correct for your income and plan.
"I still receive PHEAA/FedLoan mail." This is likely legacy correspondence. Update your contact information with your new servicer immediately. You can also verify your current servicer at studentaid.gov.
"I don't know how to log in to my new servicer." Use the same email address you had on file with FedLoan. If you don't know it, your new servicer can help you identify your account via your SSN.
